Because China is Sheriff Joe's Role Modle

Frequent readers will know that I have little love for our self-aggrandizing, civil rights violating Sheriff Joe Arpaio.  A recent Arizona Republic article wrote:

A veteran Republican lawmaker wants to know why a high-level chief for
the Maricopa County Sheriff has made recent trips to China.

Because China is Sheriff Joe's role model!  It's telling that our sheriff sends his deputies on fact-finding missions to Latin American countries and China to learn new policing techniques.  Also, the article gets into some of the increasingly weird dealings in the Sheriff Joe's infatuation with facial recognition software.

How can you possibly dislike Sheriff Joe? He provides us with so much entertainment, from pink underwear sales to lots of chain gangs. He's like Evan Mecham - too much fun to get rid of.

More seriously, his respect for civil liberties is way too low. But he is innovative in other ways - tent city, chain gangs, his very large armed civilian posses (which do not present a threat to liberties), and his seriousness about putting punishment into the penal system (it is not a "Correctional System" because they don't correct anything).

So I'd say he's a mixed plate - dangerous to civil liberties if you get on the wrong side of the law, but creative and interesting.

No frills jail is not a bad idea.

He does seem good at providing some disincentives for released criminals to resume nefarious business in Maricopa County.

For me the key part of the article in the link is: "12 News has no information that suggests Chief Deputy Hendershott has violated any laws or county policies."
