Beware of Scam Calls From (816) 420-4632 or (866) 680-8628

I post this not because the odds are high any of you readers have had this issue but I want these numbers to be found on an internet search.

Both numbers were leaving a message saying they were from "Citi" or "Citicard" calling about my account (and that it was not a sales call).  Since I have no Citicorp credit cards or accounts of any type, and since they were calling a Google Voice number that I would never have put on an account (in fact don't even really use), I was totally suspicious.  When I called them they asked for my account number.  I said I did not have one but was calling to see what kind of scam they were running.  They said they were from Citicard and don't do scams, but could I give them my phone number.  I said I had to look it up, because they were calling a Google voice number I never use.  The moment I said that, they hung up on me, the universal indicator of a scamster giving up.

Update:  There is a legitimate Citi group with the same name.  It sounds to me that these folks at the numbers above are recording the legitimate Citi greeting replaying it on their lines.  But then their physical operator answers the phone completely differently than does the legitimate Citi operator.  The Citi group being spoofed is this one.

  1. Matthew Slyfield:

The calls that annoy me the most are the ones where you pick up and get a computer voice asking you to "please hold for an important phone call".

I got revenge on one of those once, I put it on hold and walked away from the phone. Took a good 10+ minutes before the call was disconnected from the other end.

  2. ErikTheRed:

Many of these scam calls forge caller ID and / or ANI information, so they can be coming from almost any number.

  3. Matthew Slyfield:

So true, the two funniest Caller IDs I have seen are "Not In Service" and "SCAM" (an honest scam artist? WTF?)

  4. Bram:

I stopped picking up the phone for calls my caller ID can't identify long ago.

  5. ErikTheRed:

My favorites are the ones from numbers that are obviously fake - like where the area code or exchange starts with a 0 or 1. I can filter than on our phone systems; I wish there was a way to do that on my cell phone.

  6. c_andrew:

Waay back in the dark ages of land lines (mid 80's) we had a robo-caller that would dial our business lines in sequence because they were consecutive numbers. It usually happened about 1 time per week. We'd do the same thing; pick it up and then put the robo on hold.
It would take him nearly an hour to work through our 4 lines. He was still doing it 3 years later when we closed the doors.

  7. Harry:

For the past three years I have gotten phishing robo calls from Rachel, Bridget, Carmen, and others saying this is my final notice to bite. Until just today, the robo voice has urged me to take advantage of "the financial stimulus," suggesting that there is some handout forthcoming from Obama, similar to the ads on the Weather Channel to take advantage of HARP, which Obama "passed".

Today's call was the first male voice, and evidently the marketing plan has changed. They make no mention of The Stimulus. Could it be that they have decided that after QEForever, Obamacare, Benghazi, Lois Lerner, "dude,..", and the fall of Mosul, that they have decided not to associate themselves with a loser?

  9. marque2:

Losers - Obama's plan is brilliant To forget about Obamacare, he got the VA scandal going, and so we forget about that he did the Bergdol trade, and to forget about that, he announced that he was going NAZI on Carbon which people hated, but quickly forgot because of the new policy of encouraging children to illegally immigrate which was forgotten because of the Iraq collapse and new collaboration with the Iran.

He is able to do everything he wants because we forget the last scandal in a week because of the next scandal going on. And even if someone does remember - any complaints are racist.

  10. 1ofnvpeople:

has anyone ever heard of an enforcement action based on marketing or scamming calls made to a number on the 'do not call' list?

  11. Stacy Cofield:

Thank you for posting this! I have been getting calls from the 1st number but I don't pick up.

  12. anonymous:

Today I got a call from this same #816-420-4632. Except this time they pretended they were calling from Civil Rights. Beware!

  13. mv:

Nice job. I received a fishy message from this number and found this post. I called Citi to confirm. Its a scam.

  14. Guest:

Just to let you know.....I have been getting calls and texts from this phone number and it's December 2014. It's still out there.

  15. RT:

This number has been calling me every day, twice a day at the same exact times. I ignore it every time but now its starting to piss me off.

  16. Frankie:

I've gotten 2 calls from this number today...who works on New Year's Eve day???? They say they need to verify that I am me before they can tell me who they are. Because it's so personal. Legit businesses will say the name of the company at least. They called 3 times yesterday. I wish I had a blocker or a spam file like in email. This is bordering on harassment.

  17. Brandon Kraft:

I contacted Citi and asked about 816-420-4632. That is a number associated with their payments & collections department. Still shady as hell. Need to drop Citi.

  18. D:

816-420-4632 is not a number associated with Citi. Check for contact numbers.

  19. Hicks:

Just got a call from this number. The person who called asked for the wrong name and gender, then, refused to give the name of the company she was calling for. I refused to identify myself as she could not read/pronounce my name and assumed the wrong gender. You don't call my phone and refuse to identify for whom you work if it is for business.

  20. guy:

It's legit people. It is part of citi but like a retail store card

  21. JJ:

Thank you for posting. I was also receiving these calls frequently & not answering. I did become concerned given I do have a few Citi affiliated cards. However when I finally answered they wanted me to make a payment on a Dell card (which I don't have). They then asked if I wanted to pay on my other account which will be due "right around the corner"
I told them I don't pay anything over the phone & promptly hung up on them. Thanks for the heads up

  22. lgfreeee:

    Thank you for posting this.

  23. ambernichole:

I have received three calls from (816) 420-4632 today in four hours (the second time they left a voicemail stating, "This is Citibank we need you to call us at (866) 680-8628." After that voicemail and seeing this forum, I messaged Citibank to see if this was them, they messaged me back stating they (Citi) looked at the notes on my account and they had not called me today - it was indeed a fraudulent call. As I was reading that very message, (816) 420-4632 called the third time; I answered and told them, "This is not Citi! I'm looking at a message from them now; this is a fraudulent call!" She of course went on to protest and say it was Citi. I blocked their number, hopefully that will solve the problem. I will also contact the FTC per Citi's advice.

  24. rose:

to all those who think 866 860 8628 is spam, citi bank service more than 25 different cards including shell, exxon, sears, best buy, home depo, staples etc. lot of people do not know that there cards are financed by citi. When the acc is over the credit limit r past due or returned pymnt or something this department called "Citi Client First from that number calls you". The only reason most of the times they dont leave voice mail is due to card member safety. Once you pick up the cal and confirm who you are, the agents are happy to say the reason for the call.

Next time instead of yelling at the agents stop calling, I request you to call to citi customer service number or your concerned credit card cus serv number and check your credit card is up to date.

  25. RSmith:

For the past two months I've had the same call, a recording from 4 different numbers stating they were City or Citi. These calls are to both my google voice and standard cell number.
I know how both these companies contact you and it isn't a recorded message to call back at your convinience.
I blocked the first two numbers and was without annoying calls for a few weeks. Last week came a TX number and then this MO number.

  26. Wisconsin:

I have been getting this call daily for weeks. I figure if there is an urgent issue they will call and actually leave a specific message.

  27. Eunice R:

Thank you for posting this message!! I did not answer this call since I did not know who was the caller. This number consistently called me. Thanks to your posting I am blocking this number for good!!

  28. Maestra:

Thanks for the heads up on this combination of numbers 816 420-4632 and 866 680-8628. I saw your Cyote post and decided to call City Bank directly about my credit card account. They said that they do not need to talk to me about anything, so whoever called was just trying to scam me. Looks like they pretended to be calling from a real Citi Clent First number in Kansas, but then asked that I call another number, which would be the scammer. I do not give out my social or credit card information on the phone any more for this reason.

  29. Sy G:

Thanks. The first time this number called me, I answered but no one said anything, so I hung up. The second time, I let my phone ring but they did not leave a message. I decided to block the number.

  30. Robert:

I just received a call from this number and the caller stated they were with Citibank calling for my Home Depot card. I asked them to verify information about my account and they were able to. I did not give them information and told them I would call Citibank Home Depot directly to verify that call was legit. In calling Citibank and speaking with someone about my account, this number was indeed a call from Citibank.

  31. Stacy:

It's legitimate. I spoke with them and I'm glad I did. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have known about fraudulent charges on my credit card. They call until they reach you. There is a reason why they don't leave messages.

This is her grandaughter I will be taking over from now on and my mom gets calls from this number at 7:00 on a Sunday morning. It's not cool.

  34. Doth Triplet:

chat line I just talked to on citi website says it's not a citi number
they checked my accounts and said all is fine. When I looked at my accounts myself it shows I'm paid up.

  35. Kerry:

I called the number like the person who originally wrote this post. I also did not have an account # to give them so I did give them my phone number. The rep was very nice. I was informed that an account was created with my number by mistake and would be removed. He apologized and the matter was handled. I do get a lot of scam calls so I was suspicious so I'm glad that I read the comments stating that this is a legit company. Thank you!

  36. Magwheelz:

Nonsense. You obviously work for the scammers. I answered the call and it's a scam.
Every credit card or bank call I've ever gotten that had to do with a questionable charge or fraud or late payment or anything- they leave a message.

  37. Magwheelz:

And yet you don't say what the call was about.

It's a scam folks- Google the # and see all the other confirmations about this. Just one example:

  38. AJ:

They called me and told me they were with best buy. They asked me to provide my personal information like my debit or checking number.

  39. turquoisestoned:

    They are still doing it!

  40. SG:

2 years later, I am still getting calls from this number on my cell phone 5-6 times in a day. When I call the number for Citi Client First (from their website), I either get connected to a shady promotional offer or get the message that number does not exist. Citibank needs to fix this!

  41. cje54:

Thanks for posting this. I am constantly getting calls from the first number!

  42. Charles Norris:

Since they remained on the line that long, you had an excellent opportunity to report them to the State Police in Missouri, filing an official complaint, winning a harassment lawsuit which would have awarded you several thousand dollars for crime
    compensation. Also shut them down.

  43. Matthew Slyfield:

I was/am in Wisconsin, I have no idea where the call was from. I rather doubt that calling the Missouri state police would have done me any good.

  44. shay:

It could be because your over the credit limit or if your payment was even one day late citi will be calling out also.

  45. DA:

RoboKiller app..... you will love it. :). This number came in and it blocked it and wasted the reps time.

  46. Tim Lynch:

I've been receiving call from these numbers for a while. I always go online to check if it a scam number. It is! BUT...I read articles from 2010 and 2011 about the same numbers. If these are scammer numbers, how do they keep them all these years later. Shouldn't they be changing them up?

  47. TuckerdogNC:

I answered (with the speakerphone) and didn't say anything and the caller called out my first name twice before hanging up. We have received this call five times in three days.

  48. Michael A. Harris:

I got a call recently from the St. Louis # and was suspicious, but I had just opened a new Citi MasterCard, so I called the number on the back of that card, rather than that provided in the VM. After validating who I was it turned out that they weren’t calling about that account. It turns out that AutoPay on my BestBuy Visa card had mysteriously been turned off and so that account, also issued by Citi had become a few days past due.

The agent I spoke with pulled up my account and saw that in the nearly two years I have had the BestBuy account every payment was made on time, in full and via AutoPay he assured me that I had nothing to worrry about. He waived the late fee and interest, took a payment over the phone, reinstated my AutoPay and noted my account to insure that the penalty APR would not be applied.

The best part was that since the account was only 10 days past due I didn’t have to worry about adverse credit reporting.

While a call from “account services” is generally a red flag that it is a phish, in this case the fact that a human being had left a voicemail made me follow-up. By calling a verifiable number I was able to avert a credit nightmare!

  49. First_Blush21:

Just got the call. 1/2/18. Kept asking if that was MY name? What? Do they try to get the "YES', to us on fake approvals, like has been told to us? I all but cussed her out , told her to get a REAL job, that may not have to land her in JAIL. I told her I knew it was an ILLEGAL SCAM, AND THAT i WAS CALLING THE POLICE! Thank you all for the information here, so i could verify it WAS a hoax. Foreign speaking woman, ... You can smell their B.S. a million miles away!

  50. First_Blush21:

PS: I said "What is this call about?" And, she said "We're not permitted to tell you that." <<<Really? ROFL!!!
