Their main task no longer is to incite the spectators to root for their team. They now entertain, distract, and titillate the spectators during periods of sports inaction. It matters not at all to me, since I stopped watching sports events decades ago.
Actually from the 1970s pictures on the cheerleaders depicted changed from students with personal pride in their school's team's success to paid professional dancers "cheering" for professional sports teams. I don't see much of an improvement.
