Jeff Flake Finds More Pork
Arizona has a history of producing some fairly libertarian politicians, and our Congressman Jeff Flake fits that mold. Via the Club for Growth, Flake points out some more egregious pork:
Washington, D.C. - Arizona Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents the state's Sixth District, today highlighted another pork project contained in the massive omnibus spending bill that Congress passed late last year. This week's egregious earmark: $1.5 million for a demonstration project to transport naturally chilled water from Lake Ontario to Lake Onondaga.
Tim Rice:
Before the Congressman goes too far in his objections to theproject he ought to take a look at the effectiveness of similar on-line projects in Toronto, Ontario and Ithaca, New York. These projects not only reduce the expense of cooling but permit substitution of water power for fossil fuel power with resulting reductions in pollution. And, if the expectations are borne out, the environmental quality of Onondaga Lake, now one of the most polluted lakes in the nation as a result of years of unregulated dumping by major industries, will be substantially improved by the influx of fresh water from Lake Ontario. Get the facts before producing the quick slam (and while you're at it, look up the fact that it is Onondaga Lake, not Lake Onondaaga -- getting the name incorrectly might suggest you're not exactly clear what you're taling about!).
