Paul Brickhill, who was in the camp and knew many of the escapees who were later murdered by the Germans, wrote a book about it called "the Great Escape". 72 prisoners escaped. Three made it to neutral territory and back to England. The Germans shot something like 50 of them. Alas, Steve McQueen's motorcycle ride never happened. All the people in the camp were RAF officers, no Americans.
